Three Essential Government Services for People with Developmental Disabilities

About 1 in 68 children has been identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the last few years. (Centers for Control Disease and Prevention (CDC)) The statistic indicates that this number is increasing every year.

Government serices are available; however they are all based on an eligibility criteria and wait list. in some cases the wait lise could be up to 15 years. If you do not take actions today, services for your loved ones with developmental disabilities could be delayed up to 15 years. You cannot afford to wait 15 years for your child to receive services… I will tell you what these services are, why you need them, and how to apply for these services.

Social Security Benefits (SSI / SSDI)

Once the applicant is determined eligible for benefits, it comes with come sort of medical coverage. In many cases Medicade is available and is essential to offset the high cost of medical care.

This is a lengthy eligibility process, which may take from 6 months to 3 years. Best practice is to apply as soon as possible. If the individual is not eligible before the age of 18, make sure you apply for his/her benefits again the first day after the 18th birthday.

The State of Florida – Agency for People with Developmental Disabilities (ADP)

ADP works with local communities and private providers to support individuals who have developmental disabilities and their families in living, learning and working in their communities. ADP provides for many essential services including supported employment, supported living, as well as Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) placement for individuals with Developmental Disabilities.

ADP is also determined by eligibility, once the applicant is determined eligible he/she is placed on a waiting list. That waiting list as of today is 15 years long. That number is subject to change due to the availability of government resources and funds. It is advisable to apply as soon as possible.
